In a sudden move, Germany is preventing NATO ally Estonia from providing military support to Ukraine.
“Germany has refused to allow Estonians to export weapons of German origin,” writes The Wall Street Journal. “Germany is very reluctant to allow arms to be sent to us,” Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov told prestigious media.
A German government spokesman explained that the decision to export the weapons was the result of a long policy.
“The principle governing arms exports is always the same, whether directly from Germany or from third countries, no permit has been issued at this stage.”, he explained, adding that “It is not possible to assess the outcome of the process at this time.”
Estonia is lobbying hard for Germany to change course so it can send Ukraine the Howitzer D-30. Soviet weapons were left in Germany after its reunification before being exported to Finland and later to Estonia, according to a Wall Street Journal report.
Unlike other NATO members, including the United States and Britain, Germany has refused to offer weapons to Ukraine amid tensions with Russia.
Over the past year alone, the U.S. has provided more than $ 400 million in security assistance to the country at risk of conflict.
But official Berlin is cautious in avoiding provoking Moscow, while also recalling the history of Nazi atrocities in the region during World War II.
