A German electrician suspected of passing plans for the German Bundestag parliament building to Russian spies has been charged today with espionage by prosecutors in Berlin.
Raising further tensions with the Kremlin, the suspect identified as Jens F. is accused of passing information on the structure of the parliament building of Russian agents for three years.
The German citizen was working as an electrician making checks of the fire system against electrical equipment in the premises of the parliament building in the capital.
Prosecutors said Jens F. “had access to PDF files of plans on each floor of the building.”
The suspect is believed to have started illegal activity since 2017.
“For this he had prepared a data carrier with PDF files which he sent to an employee of the Russian embassy in Berlin, which is related to the secret service of the Russian army GRU,” he told prosecutors.
The development comes at a time of tension between Berlin and Moscow, following the arrest of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has stressed the importance of maintaining dialogue with Putin, as Germany is engaged in several major energy projects with Russia.
Tensions between the two countries also come after the gruesome assassination of a former Chechen commander in central Berlin, allegedly on Moscow’s orders.
Merkel said in the summer that the assassination had broken the spirit of trust and co-operation between Berlin and Moscow.
