Russia will continue to allow European countries to pay for Russian gas in euros, not rubles, as it has recently threatened, the German government has said.
“Russian President Vladimir Putin has told German Chancellor Olaf Scholz that payments from Europe next month” will continue to be made in euros and will be transferred as usual to Gazprom Bank, which is not affected by sanctions. ” said German government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit.
The bank will then convert payments into rubles, Putin said, according to Hebestreit.
“Scholz did not agree to this procedure in the conversation, but asked for written information to better understand the process.”
Russia has previously said that “unfriendly” countries will have to pay for Russian gas in rubles from March 31.
The German spokesman added that Scholz continues to be committed to the agreement of the seven most industrialized countries that Russian energy supplies should be paid only in euros and US dollars.
Germany gets about half of its gas and a third of its oil from Russia and has warned it could face recession if supplies stop abruptly.
The United States and the West have stepped up economic pressure on Russia since the latter launched the war in Ukraine on February 24.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a “special operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
