Europe’s largest economy, Germany, recorded a record 140,160 new cases in 24 hours, and the worst has yet to arrive as Germany’s health minister warned that by mid-February, the number of daily infections could reach 400 thousand.
Even that figure would be reached with an optimistic scenario if booster doses offer greater protection, Karl Lauterbach was quoted as saying by Reuters.
In the worst case, the level of new infections in a day can reach even more than 600 thousand, if the booster dose can not provide the hoped protection.
Karl Lauterbach: The problem is not that only infections will increase. We expect that in the coming weeks, the number of patients in intensive care units in hospitals will increase significantly.
So far, the coronavirus has claimed more than 116,000 lives in Germany. The pandemic continues to spread rapidly, even though the level of immunization in the country is quite high: 73 percent of the German population has been vaccinated and almost 50% have also received booster doses.
