The drug Paxlovid will have to be used in Germany from January. The German government bought 1 million packages with Paxlovid, announced the German Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach in Berlin. This drug is “extremely promising, because with early administration it significantly weakens COVID,” said Lauterbach. According to the German minister, the provision of this drug in the future will significantly facilitate intensive care units in hospitals.
The medicine is given for five days
Patients, according to data from the manufacturer, the American concern, Pfizer should be treated for five days with the drug: twice a day by three tablets. All tablets are contained in a medication package that responds to a treatment cycle. Paxlovid contains the substance Nirmatrelvir which blocks the SARS-CoV-2 protein. This stops further spread of the virus in the body.
German Foreign Minister Lauterbach has announced that an emergency permit will be issued for Paxlovid to be used in Germany immediately after delivery. In the EU the drug Pfizer is not yet allowed. The EU Medicines Authority, EMA, is verifying its authorization. But the EMA has meanwhile announced that Paxlovid can be used to treat adult patients who do not need intubation and who are at risk for severe disease progression. In the US the US drug authority, the FDA issued the emergency permit shortly before Christmas. According to Pfizer, Paxlovid “very successfully” prevents the severe course of the disease caused by Corona./ DW
