Police in Germany are investigating thousands of suspected cases of forgery of vaccine certificates against COVID-19, the DPA news agency reported today, reports Anadolu Agency (AA).
The agency cited figures obtained from the country’s 16 federal states that show more than 12,000 police investigations have been opened across the country.
DA reported that the number of investigations increased in December, as authorities announced new restrictions that largely shut down unvaccinated persons from public life.
Those who show or use false certificates can face severe penalties, from fines and probation to loss of employment.
Prosecutors have opened an investigation into negligent homicide in a case after a woman used a fake vaccine certificate to continue working in a nursing home despite having family members with COVID-19 at home.
The German Parliament is expected to start debating a universal vaccine mandate in the coming months, although government officials acknowledge that the measure is unlikely to take effect in a few months.
Almost 73 percent of the German population have received two doses of COVID-19 vaccine while almost 48 percent have received the supplemental booster vaccine.
Germany has registered today a new record number of confirmed cases. The country’s disease control agency reported 112,323 new infections in the last 24 hours and 239 COVID-related deaths./AA/
