The UK and eight South African countries have been removed from the list of virus variant zones. Several other countries have been added to the list of endangered countries.
The UK, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Eswatini and Lesotho are no longer considered virus-infected areas in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) and the Foreign Ministry in Berlin announced. These countries are now ranked in the group of high risk countries. For people who come from these countries and are vaccinated against Corona, this means that the journey will be much easier.
Western Balkan countries
Albania, Kosovo and Northern Macedonia are not currently on the list of countries endangered by the Corona virus. This means that there is no quarantine obligation for travelers coming to Germany from these countries. Only unvaccinated persons, who come by plane, should have a negative test, antigen or PCR. Vaccinated and cured in the last six months do not need tests and quarantine.
Germany surrounded by endangered countries
Classification as a high-risk area has significant effects only for unvaccinated travelers: they must have negative tests and remain in quarantine for ten days when entering Germany. After five days, they can be tested, and if the test is negative, they are released from quarantine. Persons vaccinated or cured in the last six months do not need quarantine. Germany currently classifies all neighboring countries as high-risk areas – with the exception of Austria and Luxembourg.
And when someone comes from the virus variant areas in Germany – there is also a 14-day quarantine obligation, which can not be reduced. This also applies to those who have been vaccinated or cured. In addition, there is a general ban on the arrival of citizens of these countries. This does not apply to German citizens or foreigners residing in the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as certain professional groups.
The highly contagious Omikron variant was first discovered in South Africa more than a month ago. Meanwhile, the Omikron variant is spreading rapidly in Germany as well. According to experts, Omikron will soon be the dominant variant in Germany.
New rules are required
Bavarian Health Minister Klaus Holetschek has called for the same rules across the country, on the eve of consultations on the new measures to be held on Friday. “Omikroni will probably move the Delta variant in a short time, so we have to set the course now and prepare well, so as not to enter the fifth wave unprepared,” the CSU politician told the newspaper. “Augsburger Allgemeine”. He expects that “the Conference of Prime Ministers on January 7 will adopt measures by which we can end the Omikron variant throughout the country.”
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is now recording increasing numbers of Corona virus infections. On Tuesday RKI reported 30,561 new infections, which is 9,481 cases more than last Tuesday. The seven-day incidence has risen to 239.9 from 232.4 the day before. The value shows how many people have been infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days. Another 356 people died from the virus. RKI again stressed that fewer tests were done during the holidays, so the figures could be even higher. While the number of patients infected with the Corona virus in intensive care in hospitals was 3771 on Monday./DW/
