Germany has indicated it will take urgent measures to guarantee energy supplies in the event that Russia further cuts off or cuts off its gas supplies. This will include increasing coal use, according to the government announcement.

The move comes after a warning from Russian energy giant Gazprom last week that it would significantly cut deliveries to Europe and halve its supplies to Germany.
Gazprom blamed repair work for cutting gas supplies through the Nordstream 1 pipeline to Germany to 40% of its normal capacity, but German officials believe it was a political move to punish Germany for its support of Ukraine.
