A Berlin government spokesman said deliveries would now be kept secret from “security risks”.
Germany will no longer make public the details of arms shipments to Ukraine, government spokesman Wolfgang Buechner said today, reports the Associated Press. The new secret policy will include the shutdown of live broadcasts from the country’s highways and comes after Russia announced that Western shipments with targets to Ukraine would be considered a “legitimate target”.
Buechner added that Germany will no longer publish the type of weapons it sends to Ukraine, nor the way they are sent, “to avoid security risks.”
The countries’ transport ministry will also ban transit directly from German highway cameras to prevent Russia from detecting arms convoys leaving Germany.
Germany has sent thousands of anti-tank and anti-aircraft weapons to Kiev, while Chancellor Olaf Scholz said his government had authorized the Netherlands and Estonia to send their reserves to German arms manufacturers in Kiev.
Germany is one of several NATO countries sending weapons to Ukraine, as the EU has taken the unprecedented decision to supply weapons to Kiev’s pro-Western government.
Russia has so far not hit the arms convoys towards Ukraine, but Germany’s recent move suggests the opportunity is being taken seriously by Berlin.
Foreign weapons and mercenaries to Ukraine usually cross its 535-kilometer border with Poland, as Hungary has stopped the transit of arms to Ukraine, Russian media write.
