In an effort to ease the burden on citizens to cope with rising prices and the overall cost of living, the leaders of the SPD-led coalition government of the Greens and the FDP agreed on a relief package.
“After intensive consultations, the coalition partners have agreed on broad measures to ease the burden on citizens and strengthen energy independence,” the Federal Chancellery Office announced.
But according to media reports, this package is expected to enter into force in June. This is because parts of the coalition deal must be approved by the Bundestag and the Federal Council.
Leaders of parliamentary parties and groups have agreed to further easing fuel, gas and electricity prices, which have risen sharply in the wake of the war in Ukraine.
According to this decision, families “as soon as possible” should receive a one-time bonus of 100 euros for each child. Payment will be made through child allowances. For social assistance beneficiaries there will be another payment of 100 euros per adult in the family. All employees who pay taxes will receive a one-time payment of 300 euros.
Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) announced that there will also be a fuel subsidy. The price of gasoline will be reduced by 30 cents per liter while diesel will be subsidized by 14 cents per liter. Even this measure will be limited to three months.
