The German Ministry of Defense announced that it is investigating a video which shows a soldier threatening the government with the intention of canceling measures against coronavirus and compulsory vaccination for military troops.
“The video contains threats against the constitutional state, which is unacceptable,” the minister said in a statement posted on Twitter, which did not provide further details about the ongoing investigation.
In the now widely circulated video, a man, who identifies himself as an officer and is wearing a military uniform, is seen giving the executive an ultimatum to cancel anti-pandemic measures and threatening that he and his comrades will take action if their requirements are not met.
The German military has faced a number of far-right incidents in recent years and dozens of soldiers have been suspended for links to such groups. The federal government imposed tougher restrictions this month and made vaccination mandatory for several occupations, including health care workers and military personnel.
German health officials have warned that the number of Omicron cases is doubling every two to three days and that the new strain of the coronavirus is capable of triggering a fifth massive wave of the pandemic in early January. The Robert Koch Institute reported 42,770 new daily coronavirus infections and 383 deaths Thursday, but also noted the numbers are incomplete due to irregularities in holiday reporting.
