German Minister for Europe and Climate, Anna Luhrmann said that the European Union is the future of Albania and the Balkans and this is of strategic importance.
The German Minister arrived in Tirana immediately after the visit to Skopje and was received by Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj. She demanded that Albania should not take back steps for the reforms it has launched.
Anna Luhrmann, Minister of Europe and Climate: “For me, it is important that after taking office as Minister of State for Europe, I wanted to send a message here in Albania. I want to make it clear that Albania and the Western Balkans, EU perspectives, are of strategic importance. This is in the interest of Albania and Macedonia, but also of the EU and stability in the region. We work for the good of the people in many sectors. This year, when Albania sits for the first time in the United Nations Security Council, we are glad that we can rely on this country for further action. Albania has taken steps forward. Structures to fight crime and corruption have been set up. Senior officials and criminal groups have been placed in front of the dock. The next steps would clearly undermine the reform process. The Western Balkans are important to Europe. We support the cooperation of the Western Balkan countries. The process must be comprehensive and open. That is why progress is needed. “
The number two of the Albanian government said that Albania has done its homework: I shared with the minister the concern that Prime Minister Rama and the government have about the delay in the formal opening of negotiations with the EU. Albania continues to refer to support in all polls for the integration process. On behalf of the Prime Minister and the government, I express my regret to the Minister that we have done all the homework. There is no EU member state that raises an issue with Albania that hinders the formal opening of negotiations. And although the Commission has been confirming for 3 years in a row that Albania has done its homework, I still believe that in the next 6 months we will have the formal opening of negotiations.
