The German cabinet today decides on the first package of immigration reform and what is described as the “chance law for the right to stay”, which is foreseen in the new draft law of the Ministry of the Interior.
Such legislation opens new opportunities for a category of foreigners in Germany to obtain a secure residence status.
Immigrants who have been living in this country for 5 years or longer with the “Duldung” permit, or temporary suspension of deportation of persons without the right to stay, will have the opportunity to live legally in Germany.
Specifically, the persons affected by the regulation would receive a residence permit for 1 year of probation. If at this time they show that they know the German language and can make a living, they can get a long-term residence permit in Germany.
If the new regulation comes into force, 105,000 people would benefit from it. It is also foreseen to extend the pre-deportation imprisonment for certain convicts up to six months, until the authorities provide the required documentation.
Last month, another support bill for immigrants was presented, which provided that asylum seekers with rejected asylum requests, but who are meanwhile integrated into society, will be able to stay in Germany in the future.
