German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will pay a visit to London today where he will meet with Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
This is Olaf Scholz’s first visit to London since being appointed German chancellor last year. In his short tenure in office, dominated by events in Ukraine, he has already led a maritime shift in Germany’s approach to Russia.
Schols has significantly increased defense spending, agreed with EU sanctions and is supplying arms to Ukraine. In meeting Boris Johnson, Scholz will face his intentions to act even more and even faster.
This is a very difficult prospect for Germany as it depends on Russia for a quarter of its energy expenditure and removing it from this kind of dependence would cost the German economy dearly.
