German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for “unity” in the new year and said that the greatest wish is for society to stand together.
In his message for the new year to be broadcast tonight on television, Scholz noted the COVID-19 pandemic and the flood disaster that struck Germany in July while stressing that 2021 has been a difficult year for everyone.
He recalled that some people have complained about the “disruption” of society. “Here I want to express it with full clarity. That the truth is the complete opposite of this. Our country stands united. “What I have observed in every country is a great solidarity,” said Scholz.
Noting that there are different opinions and assessments about COVID-19, Scholz said, “This is often tedious. “A strong society can face these contradictions if we listen to and respect each other.”
He stressed that the pandemic is not over and that a new variant is spreading rapidly. Scholz called on citizens to implement measures against COVID-19 and get vaccinated.
“I call on you once again, get vaccinated. I know some people are puzzled. They are concerned that vaccines may have negative results. About 4 billion people worldwide are currently vaccinated. Without side effects. Many vaccinated people have become parents of healthy children. The benefits of the vaccine are really great. Basically the new variant of the virus should be a determining factor for vaccination. “This is the way out of the pandemic,” said Scholz.
“Vaccination protects people from the severe course of the disease,” Scholz said. “We need to be faster than the virus.”
According to him, the new government in Germany has set pretentious objectives to ensure that the country progresses in a good way.
Scholz referred to the objectives for climate protection and explained that within 25 years they will make Germany independent of coal, oil, gas and that at the same time they aim to produce twice as much electricity from wind sources as today, sun and other renewable energies.
The German Chancellor explained that investments will be made in this matter and that this will at the same time bring prosperity and employment. “When we are together as a society, we can overcome the great changes of time together,” he said.
Recalling that Germany will chair the G7 in 2022, Scholz stressed that Germany will make efforts to lead the G7 countries on climate protection and on issues of a just world.
He underlined that they will work for the European Union to be successful and that the objectives here are a sovereign and strong Europe. “Transatlantic cooperation is essential for Europe ‘s security,” Scholz said.
In his New Year greeting Scholz wished the people kindness and health. “My biggest wish for 2022 is to stay together,” said the German chancellor.
