Georgia, a former Soviet state on the east coast of the Black Sea, will apply “immediately” for EU membership, says its ruling Georgian Dream party.
It comes a day after the European Parliament backed Ukraine’s bid to apply for EU membership.
The chairman of the ‘Georgian Dream’, Irakli Kobakhidze, told reporters that he was calling on the EU to “consider our request urgently and take the decision to grant Georgia the status of an EU candidate”.
Georgia has seen large demonstrations against the Russian occupation of Ukraine. Russia has controlled two Georgian regions – South Ossetia and Abkhazia – since 2008, when Russian forces drove Georgian troops out of them.
