Although separated from his homeland for more than two decades, his family has preserved the language, as he recalls: “My mother always took care to write me information in Albanian so that I would not forget the language.”
His family preserved the traditions, the traditional cuisine and the national holidays, nurturing Gjergji with a patriotic love, that he would never forget his roots. The Albanian flag is always present in their homes, especially on national holidays. Gjergji knows Albania through online media, youtube and has visited Tirana and Durrës several times.
He admires the beauty of nature, generosity and hospitality of Albanians and can not wait to visit Albania from north to south, as he describes when asked about his origin: “I come from the most pearly and blessed countries in Europe. ” His career in America today is affirmed, he is a multi-dimensional artist who makes us proud with various international productions like movies, commercials and serials that keep his signature as creator.
Actor and producer George Lako emigrated with his family to Chicago at the age of 4 and graduated in biology to pursue a career as a Dentist. His grandmother, Anita, was an extremely successful dental technician in Albania, who continued to work in the US, with a career of over 50 years of hard work between the two countries. Her tireless work was an inspiration to the whole family, so he had hoped to follow in her footsteps to become a dentist. Shortly after graduating in biology, he decided to make the difficult decision of leaving science, dentistry, and a promising career as a baseball professional to pursue his greatest passions in life: theater and film. For most of his family, this was no surprise, a camera given to him by his grandfather, Spiro Godelas, aroused his interest at a very young age and George with that camera had made numerous 35mm videos as a child.
His family has been extremely supportive when George made the career change by devoting himself to film. They believed in him a lot, as art was something that was part of the family. His brother, Steve Lako, motivated George through his successful career playing the piano and going viral on youtube with his unique cover of “Vivaldi – Spring Four Seasons”. His mother Cleopatra Lako, a brilliant nature photographer, continues to inspire George’s creative “eye” and support him mentally and emotionally.
“I remember when I was graduating from college and focusing on acting and filming full time, it was like my family became my manager. My grandmother took me to private acting classes, my brother would rehearse scenes with me while improvising auditions. My mother helped me financially with new film / acting courses and my grandfather would make sure we all ate some of the most amazing Greek / Albanian food. It was that effort of the family team that pushed me the most. Family support is everything and I could not have done it without their help. My godfather, Merle Gross was just as important in giving my brother and me the guidance and tools we needed to navigate America in the best way possible. My mother and she are angels to me”
“MI remember one of the earliest memories where I learned about art I was in Albania with my late uncle and the well-known painter, Gjergji Lako. I was very young, but it was so magical to stay with my uncle as he painted for a few hours a beautiful view of Pogradec. Gjergji Lako was an inspiration to me, even though I had only met him a few times. His beautiful paintings on the walls of our house are like children. My father told me a lot about him and his influence in Pogradec when I was little and it gave me hope that one day he too could become an artist like my uncle. After his death, Gjergji Lako inherited his profession from his talented daughter Lori Lako. Lori lives and works in Florence. She studied Visual Arts and New Expressive Styles at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and the Akademie der Bildenden Künste, Munich. George is very happy to see her follow in her father’s footsteps and can’t wait to see her flourish in the international arena.
