Mr. Joe Biden’s nominee for attorney general, Merrick Garland, moved one step closer to confirmation Monday as the Senate Judiciary Committee voted to send his appointment before the full Senate.
Garland received bipartisan support in the commission with a final vote of 15-7. The vote comes a week after he was questioned by the commission. During the hearing, Garland said one of his top priorities would be to investigate the Jan. 6 violence at the U.S. Capitol. He also said that civil rights would also take precedence.
In his testimony, Garland stressed the importance of preserving the Attorney General’s independence, saying he would be “an advocate not for any individual but for the people of the United States.” He also tried to reassure Republican lawmakers that he had no intention of delaying investigations launched by attorney generals appointed by former President Donald Trump.
Merrick Garland said he had not discussed with President Biden about the ongoing investigation into his son, Hunter Biden. The investigation includes Hunter Biden’s financial activity abroad and the tax issue. Both Mr. Joe Biden and his son Hunter have said there is no violation.
