After a 2-year closure period, the Gabonese nature parks agency has reopened public observation of famous gorillas, with the aim of promoting nature tourism.
“Tourism allows us to bring funds into park systems to protect magnificent gorillas and other species,” says gorilla project manager Koro Vogt.
Officials add that they should stay in the company of gorillas albeit at a distance, so that the animals lose their natural fear of humans.
“Kamaya is calm now, he is not disturbed by our presence. “This is a great job we have done, as it has taken years.”
“So even when tourists come, the animals will not be disturbed and this will help raise awareness for their protection,” the official added.
The giant Loango Park stretches over 1,500 square kilometers and attracts high-paying luxury tourists to see Kamaya and his colleagues.
Visitors pay around 450 euros to watch the gorillas for an hour, in addition to parking and accommodation costs.
The other guide, Hermann Landry, says caretakers come every morning to look for gorillas by discovering the dens where they spent the night.
“We then follow in their footsteps or signs of feces and food, to stay away from them.”
“It’s a job that requires patience and we need to raise awareness among as many people as possible about their protection,” he added.
