The next G7 summit is being held today until June 28 under the German presidency, as the group’s next chair. The meeting is held in a luxurious setting, Elmau Castle, located in the Bavarian Alps, which is a five-star resort turned into a fortress for the three-day meeting of the club of rich nations.
While heads of state and government initially wanted to talk only about financial and currency issues in small groups, today almost all issues of global importance are on the G7 agenda. And Russia’s war on Ukraine will inevitably dominate the summit, and the leaders of the United States, Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Canada, and Japan are facing a difficult challenge.
They aim to make a show of unity and determination for the war. The idea would be to send a signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin that the West has the strategic patience to maintain its support for Ukraine, even if it faces domestic political pressure.
The problem for G7 leaders is that they are also facing increasing pressure to show that they are facing the global economic crisis. Rising fuel and food prices are causing famine and unrest around the world. And some countries are pointing the finger to the West.
In an effort to counter this narrative, the G7 countries are expected to use the summit to show that they are acting to help countries around the world and that they will take additional measures to punish Russia.
