Ukrainians around the world have long sought peace for their country, amid prayers, military aid or even weapons. And yet not for everyone the situation is the same. In Albania, one of the remaining pacts is the volleyball player of Erzeni Shijak Stanislav Azarov.
With his family in mind, he is still waiting to return to his hometown, where his family is waiting for him. In one of his stories for Top Channel, Azarov shows the moment of anxiety, between sports and war, but filled with confidence by his Albanian friends.
Sanislav Azarov: My family is in Ukraine and I find it very difficult to play here while there is war. I talk to them on the phone every day, I watch the news, the situation is very bad. A lot of people out there are losing their lives and sometimes I think about coming back. People here tell me; “Sanislav, if you need something or need something, tell us.” I’m glad we are all together and we all want this war to end.
But where is your family and how endangered is it?
Sanislav Azarov: My family is the Dnieper, at the moment they have not attacked him, but very close to us they have dropped bombs in Kharkiv. Every evening the war sirens sound and every morning I wake up here with a mix of emotions, I feel nervous. A very bad feeling.
Have you thought about going there?
Sanislav Azarov: It is very difficult to go, even if I think I do not know how to go all the roads are closed, my parents tell me to stay here. But I want to go home, I want to help my country, I was born there, I’m proud to be Ukrainian. If I were in Ukraine now I would be at war. I’m not afraid, he’s my place.
Do you have Russian friends? Have we had any teammates in our careers?
Sanislav Azarov: I had a Russian teammate, but after the war started I do not talk to them anymore. This is something political, we used to be called brothers, Russians and Ukrainians, but now suddenly the war started. From this moment on, I no longer have a Russian friend. If a Russian says friend to me, I will be no, no…
How are your days here in Albania?
Sanislav Azarov: Every day I wake up and pray, “Please God, stop this war.” I want to go home ..
