The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuçi., Met on Wednesday evening at an informal dinner in Berlin, for the first time since July last year.
“I welcomed the opportunity for an informal dinner of discussions on dialogue with Prime Minister Kurti and President Vucic in Berlin. Grateful to the German government for the reception. We will continue the discussions at the level of chief negotiators on May 13 “, wrote on social networks, the special envoy of the European Union for the Kosovo-Serbia talks, Miroslav Lajçak.
The dinner followed separate meetings of the two leaders with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, in which it was discussed, as stated, the coordination of further reactions to Russia’s aggression in Ukraine as well as regional cooperation.
Chancellor Scholz had invited to Berlin the EU envoy for the Kosovo-Serbia talks, Miroslav Lajcak. The meeting was also joined by the German envoy for the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin.
Western diplomats have long sought to secure a high-level political meeting between Kosovo and Serbia, and Wednesday’s meeting is seen as a step towards relaxation that will help renew the process towards normalizing relations between the parties.
German Chancellor Scholz said earlier after meeting with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti that an agreement on the normalization of Kosovo-Serbia relations would pave the way for the integration of both countries into the European Union.
“The purpose of the Brussels talks is a comprehensive, lasting agreement between the two countries, which opened both countries to the prospect of European Union membership and contributes to regional stability,” said Chancellor Scholz. but of course this includes what Germany has done for a long time, so it is the recognition of Kosovo “.
Prime Minister Kurti said that the talks should be focused on mutual recognition “so not on recognition that comes at the end of a long process, but as a dialogue for agreements with mutual recognition at the center.”
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, meanwhile, said he “believes we will have the power to move forward in talks with Pristina.”
Earlier last week, US Assistant Secretary of State Karen Donfried said normalization was the way to counter Russia’s efforts to destabilize the Balkans.
Serbia is the only country in the region that has not imposed sanctions on Russia because of its aggression in Ukraine.
The German Chancellor said that the war is unacceptable and “I conveyed to President Vuçi tim my concern about the situation in Bosnia. “It’s very important to maintain stability there.”
Russian aggression in Ukraine has raised concerns about the effects of the conflict in the Western Balkans as well.
“I promised Chancellor Scholz that Serbia would not be the cause of any problems and we keep our word,” said the Serbian president. / VOA
