Rebellious fans of the German team Eintracht Frankfurt yesterday fired fireworks at the Scottish rivals Rangers and Spanish police before the final in Seville, as a crowd of more than 200 German supporters attacked the Scots last night before today’s Europa Cup final.
Spanish police said they had arrested five German Eintracht fans many of whom in disguise fired fireworks at a group of Rangers fans sitting in Seville bars on Tuesday night.
Footage broadcast on Spanish television showed heavily armed police officers who, even during the riots, stood between two fans firing objects at each other.
One of the blazing fireworks fell near the Irish bar O’Neills on Paseo de Colon where similar riots had previously taken place and against Eintracht Frankfurt fans and the West Ham Englishmen before a match in March.
A Rangers fan is seen taking something from the ground and dropping it in the form of a weapon against German fans on the other side of the police line.
Police said the riots started when about 200 Eintracht Frankfurt supporters launched attacks or provocations against Rangers fans near Seville Cathedral.
Numerous police reinforcements came to the scene stopping the deterioration of the situation and the establishment of order.
More than 100,000 Rangers fans and around 50,000 Eintracht Frankfurt supporters are estimated to have landed in Seville for today’s Europa Cup final.
But only a total of 20,000 have tickets to enter the 40,000-seat Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium.
Police said there were no serious injuries as a result of yesterday’s incidents other than a Rangers fan suffering a head injury.
