France has significantly reduced inflows from the UK as the newest and most transmissible type of COVID-19, the Omicron continues its rapid progress.
“Only those who urgently need to do so will be able to enter or leave the UK, starting at midnight on Saturday,” French Prime Minister Jean Castex said today.
He noted that this does not include business trips or tourism, reports atsh.
Under the new rules, people will have to register before traveling from the UK to France, undergoing a PCR test or being quarantined at a selected location upon arrival in France, regardless of whether or not they have been vaccinated.
They will be able to quarantine if they test negative for the virus after 48 hours.
“Travelers will need a compelling reason to travel to or from the UK, although this does not apply to French nationals and their spouses and children,” Castex said.
Castex announced that controls had been put in place to monitor compliance with the measures.
Anyone thinking of traveling to the UK was asked to rethink their plans.
French government spokesman Gabriel Attal has said the rules are intended to slow down the arrival of Omicron cases in France.
