France must invest more money to fight wildfires, Agriculture Minister Marc Fresneau said on Wednesday, as President Emmanuel Macron is expected to visit the Gironde region, which has been worst hit by the fires.
“We have to go further,” Fesneau told France 2 Television.
Fesneau said that the Government has already allocated 850 million euros to improve the fleet of aircraft for extinguishing fires and 1 billion euros for replanting trees.
“We have to face a rather extraordinary situation. We are talking about more than 20,000 hectares affected by fires in the Gironde, 1,500 in Finistere and 1,500 in the Bush du Ron,” added Fesneau, referring to the damage caused by recent fires in the south of France.
Since July 12, firefighters in southwest France have been battling wildfires.
The heat wave has gripped Europe, as temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius were recorded for the first time in Britain on Tuesday.
Germany on Tuesday also recorded the hottest day of the year, namely temperatures reached 39.5 degrees Celsius.
Heat waves are becoming more common, more intense and lasting longer due to human-caused climate change.
The World Meteorological Organization has warned that the worst is yet to come.
“In the future, these heat waves will be normal and we will see more extreme temperatures,” said the head of the World Meteorological Organization, Peterri Taalas./REL
