The Municipal Council of Tirana approved a few days ago the naming of 4 new streets in the capital with the names of the martyrs Fatos Xhani, Kastriot Feska, Saimir Duçkollari and Altin Dizdari who lost their lives in 2009 in the action to capture Dritan Dajti.
Today, on the 109th anniversary of the establishment of the State Police, the Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj received in a special meeting their family members, symbolically handing them a plaque with the name of the new streets.
Veliaj said that Tirana and all of Albania is an even safer place thanks to the contribution of those who gave their lives for the implementation of the law. “A day of gratitude for those who serve today in police uniform, for those who have served and especially for those who have fallen in the line of duty. If many of us give energy and time, some have given their lives for this mission. For the four martyrs of August 7, 2009, this city has reserved a special respect to immortalize them in street names, at a crossroads in Administrative Unit number 1. Four heroes who in the morning kissed their wives and children to go to work and never returned, in a battle with crime and a battle with an Albania that we more and more want to leave behind, for an Albania that grows more and more secure, thanks to their contribution, and thanks to those who gave their lives “, Declared Veliaj.
The Mayor said that a Homeland martyr will never be a statistic. He provided for the support and encouragement of the families of the martyrs of the homeland. “For us here in Tirana, a martyr of the Homeland is not a statistic, he is a hero. A hero for those who were alive, for those who remember them, but also a hero for those who were born after 2009, to understand that in the names of this city, in the names of streets and schools, we put people who make us feel proud. I can not wait for the proposals for the Municipal Council, that we also do ours when it comes to some facilities, such as housing and employment, especially for the families of those who are martyrs of the homeland “, said Veliaj.
He underlined that Tirana is one of the safest cities in Europe, which is clearly shown in the increase in the value of citizens’ property. “I look forward to doing more together, not just for the police officers on duty. Today we talked about some projects where we want to be co-financiers, of a network of smart cameras that read license plates, that prevent many of the problems, and in the circulation of some decisions we have made, and the circulation of heavy vehicles such as concrete mixers or trucks “, said Veliaj.
He added that he will always be an advocate of the common good. “This is a city with 1 million inhabitants, we will have to coexist. If people have to go to work in the morning, if children will have to go to school, trucks, concrete mixers and iron can also work at night. Every day we make decisions that perhaps a silent majority can hardly wait for, but perhaps a minority that may have the media, that may have money, that may have access to politics, tries to repel them. “As long as we serve the majority, we must have a clear conscience for the difficult decisions we make to move forward, to take this city as high as possible”, stressed Veliaj.
The Deputy General Director of the State Police, Albert Dervishaj, praised the cooperation of the Municipality of Tirana and the Mayor Veliaj for the continuous support. “We thank the Municipal Council, you personally for the first decision you took in naming the streets of the city of Tirana, the capital of Albania, for the Martyrs of the Fatherland. This shows the sensitivity that not only the local government, not only the mayors, have in this regard, but also the appreciation they have for the fallen police officers. “The State Police is at the forefront of work in terms of security and public order, not only in Tirana, but throughout Albania,” said Dervishaj.
The Municipal Council assessed that the mission of the 4 martyrs will be remembered forever as an example of courage and will, up to self-sacrifice, for the common good and for a high ideal, such as the fight against crime and evil.
