The FIA has announced that it has deprived Russia of the right to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix for next season.
In a statement issued Friday, the organization said that “it is impossible to maintain the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances.”
“The FIA Formula One World Championship is visiting countries around the world with a positive vision of uniting people, uniting nations,” the statement said.
“We are looking at developments in Ukraine with sadness and shock and hope for a speedy and peaceful solution to the current crisis.”
On Thursday, one of the sport’s most successful pilots, four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel, said he would refuse to compete if she went ahead.
The move comes after the governing body of European football, UEFA, announced that it had stripped the Russian city of St. Petersburg of the right to host the 2022 Champions League final.
