In the Social Democratic Party, the SPD still has members who are grateful to Gerhard Schröder. His No for the Iraq war, for example, had many supporters.
There is still talk in this party that the then leader of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Angela Merkel, would have sent German soldiers to the war. But after Schröder’s insistence on not handing over the mandates he has in the Russian concerns, the SPD also lost patience. Coalition partners, the SPD, the Greens and the Liberals (FDP) together now want to strip the former chancellor of his privileges.
The request states that the office of the former chancellor in the Bundestag will be closed. The government is also required to verify that other privileges derive from the obligations that continue after the post, and not be status-related. This sets criteria that apply to other former and future chancellors. Whoever works in his previous post, such as having patronage or giving speeches and diplomatic trips, can rely on the resources provided by the Bundestag, whoever does not do so in the future will not enjoy these privileges. Job contracts reserved for the former chancellor in the Bundestag will be extended until May 19, 2022. The remaining staff will take care of the completion of office duties and then move on to other posts.
Schröder is allowed bodyguard
The former German chancellor will apparently be allowed to have a bodyguard. This is in the case of assessing the security situation for the former chancellor according to the Federal Office of Forensics. The CDU and CSU had demanded that the former chancellor be stripped of his post-term payments. According to ARD information, the Social Democrats, the Greens and the Liberals verified this step legally and in the end did not include it in the request, because it is very likely that the request of the CDU / CSU Union does not comply with the constitution.
Schröder has been sharply criticized in Germany because, despite Russian aggression against Ukraine, he did not relinquish his posts in major Russian concerns. He still works for state-owned Rosneft and the Nord Stream 2 AG pipeline company. In a controversial interview with the New York Times, Schröder described the war as a mistake, but did not distance himself from his friend, President Putin. SPD chairwoman Saskia Esken then asked Schröder to submit the membership document after 60 years of membership in the SPD.
