Small business, mainly bars, pubs and restaurants, will benefit from the forgiveness of the public space fee by the Municipality of Tirana.
The same initiative was taken by the municipality in April 2020, as a measure to help business due to the pandemic. The mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, said that the decision will enter into force after the elections, because it is not currently allowed by the Central Election Commission.
“We want to repeat this year the amnesty for local tariffs. If hotels have not had jobs, what fee will they pay? “If you close the restaurant at 20:00, why do you have to pay a tax for public space?”, Said Veliaj. “It will enter into force after the elections, since we are in the election period and the CEC has forbidden us to take such measures”, stressed Veliaj.
On the other hand, the mayor added that the sacrifice that the Municipality of Tirana is making is to come to the aid of the business, which has lost all the time of the pandemic.
On the other hand, he mocked the decision of the CEC to fine him, a fine which was later removed as illegal. “You know, I am also fined when I do more work than I should! I do not know why there are no fines for those who sleep, or for those who leave work? There are no fines for those who get up at 11:00, but for those who work more than they should, ”Veliaj joked.
