For the first time in two decades, the number of Serbs who oppose membership of the European Union is higher than those who want to become members, according to a new poll.
The poll, which was conducted by Ipsos and originally published in the Blic newspaper, found that 44% of participants are against membership, while 35% are in favor.
Ipsos’ Marko Uljarevic told Blic that it was the first time that the number of those who opposed EU membership exceeded those in favor.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said the findings were similar to those in the ruling Serbian Progressive Party.
““I believe that Serbia has a place in the European Union, I believe that we must continue on our European path and that we must fight for our dignified path to Europe,” he added. “We must maintain our independence in decision-making, at least until we become members of the EU.”. Serbia submitted its application for EU membership in 2009.
Accession talks began in 2014, but ongoing tensions between Serbia and Kosovo have hampered the process. Although Serbia is seeking to join the bloc, Belgrade is also watching from Moscow.
She voted in favor of three UN resolutions condemning Russian aggression against Ukraine, but did not join international sanctions against Moscow. The poll comes after Serbian Interior Minister Aleksandar Vulin said the country should reconsider its stated intention to join the European Union amid alleged Western pressure to join international sanctions against Russia over the war in Ukraine.
