The European Parliament’s European Affairs Committee called for the final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia to be “based on mutual recognition”, the first time an EP committee has openly mentioned such a thing.
The appeal comes just days after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz demanded the same during a visit to Pristina and Belgrade, prompting an angry reaction from Serbia, which opposes Kosovo’s independence.
Even Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said during the press conference with him, that for the first time he heard someone from the European Union is asking for the Brussels dialogue to result in mutual recognition.
The calls are part of the commission’s reports on Kosovo, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, which will then be debated in the European Parliament.
The Commission said it supports the European Union-mediated Kosovo-Serbia talks and “reiterates the importance of constructive commitment on the part of the Serbian and Kosovo authorities to reach a comprehensive legally binding normalization agreement, based on mutual recognition, which is essential.” for both countries ”.
The Commission called for all past agreements to be respected and fully implemented in good faith and in a timely manner, including the Association of Serb-majority Municipalities.
The report also calls on the EU Council to urgently take a decision on visa liberalization for Kosovo citizens.
