For the period January-June 2022, egg imports reach record numbers.
The increase started after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in March, reaching the peak in May and June.
According to customs data for “Monitor” for the January-June period, egg imports are about 25 times higher than the same period in 2021. In total, 380.7 thousand kg of eggs were imported in this period from 15.4 thousand kg eggs that were imported years ago.
The high trend of egg imports was also noted in 2015. Compared to this period, the imports of January-June 2022 are about 2.5 times higher.
Operators claim with concern that they are losing competitiveness due to high imports mainly from Serbia at a lower price than local eggs. Sales director of the egg company “Ovvital” Mr. Lilo Seraj underlined for “Monitor” that currently the wholesale price of eggs from livestock farms has decreased by 5% (from 18 ALL to 17 ALL per grain). According to him, the drop in price has come from the increase in the import of eggs at a cheaper price than the country’s and the mitigation of costs from domestic supplies of wheat and corn.
“The import of category A eggs from Serbia also affected the price reduction, as the price is many times cheaper, this is a consequence of the tax system they have for raw materials and livestock. We are taxed 20% for raw materials, while in Serbia the tax is 6%. Also, Serbia is one of the largest producers of wheat and corn in the region. We are taxed 20% for raw materials, while in Serbia the tax is 6%. The general consumption of all items has decreased and the impact we expected from tourism is not what was expected”, he emphasized.
The high increase in imports of some livestock farms is also giving effects to the decrease in production. Years according to INSTAT data in 2021 were produced 9% more than in 2020. In the egg market there is always overproduction, for this reason operators always feel panic, as they cannot keep the price within the cost and profit rates, as the egg is a delicate product and cannot be stored for a long time, therefore the price is reduced.
Before the wave of grain price increases due to the Russia-Ukraine war, the price of wholesale eggs was 13 ALL per grain. In mid-March, wholesale eggs from farms were sold at 18 Lek per grain (a 38% increase) from 15 Lek per grain previously, while in grocery stores the price of eggs reached 19 Lek from 17 Lek per grain that sold before.
At the end of March, the selling price of eggs from retail stores reached 24 ALL per grain, due to the lack of 50% of daily production due to the death of chickens from avian influenza./D.Azo
