Kosovo is not yet at the moment when it can expect visa liberalization, although the European Commission has confirmed that all conditions have been met.
This is what an EU diplomat said, saying that one of the main reasons why he is reluctant to liberalize visas for Kosovo is what he called “a bad experience in the case of Albania and Georgia.”
“When visas were liberalized for Albania and Georgia, the Commission also said that all the conditions were met. But after the abolition of visas we had a lot of people who came to our countries, including criminals and extremists. This liberalization was abused. “It took some time to solve this problem,” he said.
This source added that in the case of Kosovo “we first want to be convinced that there is full confidence in the authorities that we will not have a problem and then visas will be liberalized.”

The diplomat also spoke about the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia and warned that there would be “a diplomatic commitment to move things as Kosovo and Serbia continue to have diametrically opposed positions.”
Germany and France, which will soon take over the rotating EU presidency, are expected to work together on this.
A conference dedicated to the Western Balkans is also expected during the French Presidency of the EU.
This will not be a classic EU-Balkan summit, as one will take place during the Czech EU presidency in the second half of the year.
It is expected to be more of a “conference where some specific problems of the region will be discussed”.
Among the “specific problems” are considered mostly the crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the relations between Kosovo and Serbia.
