Survivors of the boat that was engulfed in flames in the early hours of the morning have confessed that not everyone could have escaped as there were people who were asleep when the fire started.
According to Greek media, the fire on the ship with 239 passengers and 51 crew members is suspected to have started from the garage, possibly from a refrigerated truck.
“The flames started coming out of the outer decks after we left the ship. Then we heard the bursting of truck tires. If the crew had not reacted immediately, I do not know what would have happened, maybe the fire had caught us“, Said a passenger.
Another spoke to MEGA as he was getting off the lifeboat saying: “It’s a loss, not something special. They woke us up at 4:30. “The fire from what we saw came from the garages.” The same person expressed concern that there might be truck drivers sleeping in their trucks in the ship’s garages and may be trapped.
Meanwhile, two people, suspected to be of Bulgarian origin, were found trapped inside and were trying to pull them out while explosions were heard from the ship’s garage.
As soon as the fire broke out, the ferry captain requested and ordered its abandonment and the passengers immediately boarded the lifeboats. Three Greek Coast Guard ships, tugboats and other nearby ships immediately arrived at the scene.
