CNN has provided a video which shows the moment when Russian soldiers shoot and kill two unarmed civilians on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital Kiev.
The footage is now being investigated by Ukrainian prosecutors as evidence of war crime. Both civilians died after the shootings, which violate the rules of war, which prohibit the targeting of civilians.
The American media giant has identified the victims, one of whom was the owner of the car dealership that was robbed, whose family does not want her name to be made public.
The other was Leonid Oleksiyovych Plyats, a 68-year-old who worked there as a guard. In the video, Ukrainian civilians are seen talking to Russian soldiers, minutes before being shot from behind and killed. Plyats’s daughter, Julia, said she could not watch the video of her father’s death, but was saving it to one day tell it to her children, so they would not forget how savage the invaders were. “They are executioners,” she told CNN.
“It’s terrible because my father was a civilian, he was 68 years old, a peaceful unarmed man.” Footage from security cameras was recorded in March, during Moscow’s initial attempts to take Kiev. On the main road to the capital, fierce fighting took place, but what happened outside the car dealership was not a battle at all, but a pure execution: It was a cowardly act, a cold-blooded murder of two unarmed men, says CNN, which has already confirmed video authenticity.
