Shehbaz Sharif, the younger brother of three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, has been elected today to oust ousted Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Imran Khan stepped down after a no-confidence vote by abandoning coalition members over criticism of U.S. foreign policy.
Sharif, 70, is the younger brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who has served three times in the role.
He called for better relations with the United States today, after the US State Department denied allegations of interference in Pakistan’s internal affairs, which had been raised earlier by ousted Prime Minister Khan.
Shahbaz Sharif had led the opposition movement in parliament to oust Khan, while the latter had accused him of a Washington plot to overthrow him.
Khan’s Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party had submitted the name of former Foreign Minister Mahmud Qureshi to replace Khan.
Many party members resigned en masse when Qureshi lost the vote, and this will require an election process to fill their posts.
The brother of new Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Nawaz was banned from holding public office by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in 2017 after being sentenced to 10 years in prison for corruption. But as a result he spent only a few months in prison and left the country arguing for medical treatment.
After the vote that ousted him from office, Khan remained challenging yesterday, commenting: “The struggle for freedom begins today against a foreign conspiracy to change the regime in the country.”
He later posted photos of his supporters on the streets, which he said “rejected the criminal-led imported government.”
Thousands of people had demonstrated by blocking roads in several cities such as Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar, chanting anti-US slogans and against opposition parties.
No prime minister has managed to complete his full term in Pakistan since the country’s independence in 1947. As Khan becomes the first to be dismissed by a vote of no confidence.
The Pakistani military has often dominated the policy of the nuclear-possessing country, according to the DW network. Even in Khan’s election in 2018, the military establishment gave its approval.
