The French are voting today in the first round of the presidential election after a campaign overshadowed by the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
The Interior Ministry said that 25.48 percent of citizens voted at noon on Sunday, less than in 2017.
From left-wing communists to far-right anti-immigration candidates, they are seeking to oust incumbent President Emmanuel Macron as he seeks to become the first French president to win re-election since Jacques Chirac in 2002.
The two candidates who receive the most votes will qualify for the second round of elections on April 24.
About 48.7 million French people are expected to vote, though polls have warned that a quarter of them could abstain. The first round of elections is expected at 20:00 Paris time.
