The Iberian Peninsula and France are in the grip of a scorching heatwave, with above-normal temperatures fueling raging forest fires in some areas.
This hot front, the second since the beginning of summer, is expected to last until at least the middle of next week. Meteorologists in France warn that the situation can become more intense between Sunday and Tuesday – exceeding 40 degrees Celsius. In the south of the country, the flames have burned 2,800 hectares of forests, half of which are pine trees near Bordeaux.
Over 150 people have been forced to leave their homes there. Another 500 were evacuated from the village of Guillos as the flames approached their homes.
“Think about it, even the tops of the 30-meter-high pines were on fire. We watched the fires approach the village, it was terrible”said Mayor Maylene Doreau.
About 600 firefighters are fighting the flames in the region, assisted by aerial vehicles. Two Canadian tanker planes dropped water on the Gironde area, where nearly 6,000 campers fled in terror.
Much of Spain has been placed on heat alert, with the valleys around the three major rivers, Guadiana, Guadalquivir and Tagus, most at risk. Andalusia in the south, Extremadura in the southwest and Galicia in the north are the most affected.
“It’s taking our breath away. We don’t know how to cope with this. We no longer travel for ourselves, but for our children and grandchildren“, Marta Alfonso said.
In some southern cities such as Seville and Cordoba, the thermometer is already above 44 degrees Celsius. Near the border with Portugal, forest fires have so far destroyed 3,500 hectares. In this country, many farmers have come out to fight the flames themselves to save their houses and animals.
