The ship that was engulfed in flames also had vehicles being transported but remained amid the fire as the crew left urgently. It is still unclear what caused the fire, but it is suspected that the flames started from a refrigerated truck.
Among other things, one of the cars believed to be on board is a Porsche 718 Spyder belonging to YouTube star Matt Farah.
He reacted on Twitter by writing: “I just got a call from my dealer. “My car is now probably engulfed in fire in the middle of the ocean.”
Another reaction from Porsche, which had hundreds of cars on board, referred to the incident but did not provide details on the matter: “We are aware of an incident aboard the Felicity Ace, a specialized cargo ship carrying several Porsche vehicles. We will provide additional information on how this affects you, once we have additional information and know the full extent of the problem.
The Volkswagen Group acknowledged the incident, saying in a statement: “We are aware of an incident involving a cargo ship carrying Volkswagen Group vehicles across the Atlantic. At the moment, we are not aware of any injuries. “We are working with local authorities and the transport company to investigate the cause of the incident.”
Among other things, smoke is still coming out of the ferry and about 14 people are still missing. This has been made known by the counting of other persons who had boarded the lifeboats. The search-and-rescue operation is still ongoing to find the missing passengers while 2 are learned to have been trapped inside the ship.
There were 290 people on board the ship. As soon as it was engulfed in flames, the ferry captain requested and ordered its abandonment and the passengers immediately boarded the lifeboats. Three Greek Coast Guard ships, tugboats and other nearby ships arrived at the scene immediately.
