A tragic fire in an apartment building in the Bronx, New York, has killed at least 10 adults and nine children, while about 200 firefighters were called to the scene to rescue young children and other victims.
The deadly fire had started last night in an apartment building in the Bronx as gruesome scenes from the scene showed victims dealing with stretchers and firefighters climbing stairs to the windows of the building.
Initial reports said the blaze had started in an apartment on the third floor but it is not yet clear what caused it.
The fire was isolated from other floors of the 20-storey building on Tiebout Avenue in the Bronx.
Fire chief Frank Dwyer said the tragedy started at around noon yesterday.
“We have employees all over the building, but it is one of the least protected from fire and there are almost no alarms.”
New York City Mayor Eric Adams described the fire as “one of the heaviest” in the city’s history.
Many affected were taken to area hospitals with burn wounds.
Investigations continue.
