Finnish President Sauli Niinisto has announced Russian leader Vladimir Putin in a phone call about his plans to join NATO.
A statement from the Finnish government on the phone said that Russian demands in late 2021 aimed at preventing countries from joining NATO and Russia’s massive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 had changed the security environment in Finland.
The Finnish president also reminded Putin by phone of their first meeting in 2012, explaining that any independent nation maximizes its security by joining NATO.
“The conversation was direct and took place without irritation. “Avoiding tensions was considered important.” said Niinisto in a statement.
Following Finland’s announcement that it plans to apply for NATO membership, Russian electricity supplies to its neighbor have ceased and Russia has conducted military exercises in its Baltic Sea enclave of Kaliningrad.
