Finland says applying to join NATO is only about defense. But Vladimir Putin does not see it that way. He has always seen NATO’s eastern enlargement as a threat.
The membership of Finland and Sweden in NATO, will further strengthen the strength of the alliance by increasing its capacity and presence in the Baltic Sea. Finland shares a 1,300 km (800 mile) border with Russia, bringing the alliance’s military strength much closer to Moscow.
The Kremlin has threatened retaliation. Some fear it could deploy targeted nuclear weapons.
But Finnish diplomats believe Russia has its full military hand in Ukraine and will instead focus on cyber and disinformation campaigns.
They say President Putin should blame himself for NATO enlargement. Before Russia invaded Ukraine, most Finns and Swedes preferred to work together, but not within NATO. Russian aggression, its expansionist zeal, changed everything.
