Luiza and Mirela Apostoli told reporters on the investigative show that their father was admitted to Ioannina Hospital in December 2020 by COVID. Relatives search for the name of the second patient but do not find him, as that name did not exist in the place they were told at the hospital. The two sisters suspect that the Hospital of Ioannina has entangled the dead bodies, while in their father’s grave there may be someone else.

Family members call the Ioannina Hospital, asking for information. On the first call, Hospital staff were told that there was a mess and that they looked in the hospital records and it turned out that their father had passed away. “I believe that one of my colleagues said that.

The doctor of the University Hospital of Ioannina told her that a mistake had been made in the letters. After this situation in the Hospital of Ioannina, the family comes to Albania and asks the Saranda Prosecutor’s Office to exhume their father to do a DNA analysis. They report to the prosecutor’s office, while the case is being investigated by prosecutor Ilir Hoxha. After several months of investigation, the prosecutor terminates the investigation, as he argues that “family members have submitted to the Civil Registry a document from the Hospital of Ioannina” that the deceased had died from Covid. For this reason, the prosecutor did not accept the exhumation.

According to the documents available to Fiks Fare, on February 16, 2022, the Saranda Prosecutor’s Office sent the Apostoli family the decision not to initiate criminal proceedings. In the document of only 2 pages, the prosecutor Ilir Hoxha writes that from December 11, 2020, Mr. Kristo Apostoli, had been hospitalized at the Covid Intensive Care Unit at the University General Hospital of Ioannina, Greece. After the citizen passed away, his body “in a closed coffin” was transported to Albania, where he was buried by his family in the village of Peza. During this process, the relatives of the deceased did not open the coffin, a circumstance for which the wife of the deceased reports that “we had an order from the Greek state”.

The prosecutor writes that the family members sent a document from the Ioannina Hospital to the Civil Registry in Mesopotamia, Finiq, where it was confirmed that “Mr. Christo Apostoli had died”. He further writes that the family members have doubts about the death and ask for help in uncovering the event as they do not know what is inside the coffin. They even demanded the exhumation! The prosecutor reasoned that the documents submitted by the family members in the Civil Registry are indisputable, where it is proven that the deceased died from COVID 19. The phone calls of the Ioannina Hospital, for the prosecutor, are not enough to identify elements of any criminal figure .

When we met the prosecutor without closing the investigation, he told us to “go and open the grave yourself”. Now he changed his mind and did not let us.
