A duel rooster named Raja has been ordered to appear in court in India after beheading his master as he tried to flee an illegal duel being staged.
The incident happened on February 23 in Jagtial in the Indian province of Telangana.
Raja was brought by Mr. Thanugula Satish, to the illegal arena of duels at the Yellamma temple in Gollapalli, and according to custom Satish fixed on his feet the 5cm long knives, known as the ‘kathi code’, with which the turkeys face to death the opponent Theirs.
When Raja tried to leave the duel place, Satish caught the rooster but knives mounted on his legs hit him in the upper thighs and he bled to death.
Raja is already being held at the local police station after the incident, and will appear in court as part of evidence against 15 detainees for organizing illegal fighting.
“We are looking for 15 other people involved in the illegal turkey fights.” said local police officer B. Jeevan.
Officials said the charges would include contributing to Satish’s death from engaging in the illegal activity that caused his death. They will be charged with manslaughter, illegal gambling and turkey duel.
Turkey duels are banned in India but the activity remains common in rural areas.
A few months ago a police officer in the Philippines was accidentally killed by the knives of a rooster’s legs, during an operation to stop illegal fighting.
