An American hospital has rejected a patient for a heart transplant because he was not vaccinated against Covid-19.
DJ Ferguson, 31, desperately needs a new heart, but Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston removed it from their list, said his father, David. The hospital said it was pursuing politics.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital i tha BBC in a statement: Given the lack of available organs, we do everything we can to ensure that a patient receiving a transplanted organ has the best chance of survival.
A spokesman said the hospital was seeking “Covid-19 vaccine and lifestyle behaviors for transplant candidates to create the best chance of a successful operation and ensure patient survival after transplantation, given that their immune system is drastically suppressed ”.
The hospital added that most of the 100,000 people on the waiting lists for organ transplants will not receive an organ within five years due to a lack of available organs.
Ferguson has been in the hospital since last Thanksgiving weekend, November 26, 2021 and he suffers from an inherited heart problem, which causes his lungs to fill with blood and fluid.
The fundraiser said Ferguson was concerned he might experience cardiac inflammation, a possible side effect of coronavirus vaccination that US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says it is rare and temporary and that he may prove dangerous given the weakness of his heart.
Ferguson, a father of two and a third soon remains in hospital.
His family has suggested he is too weak to be transferred to another hospital and that he is “running out of time”.
“My son is fighting very bravely and he has integrity and principles that he really believes in and that makes me respect him even more.” said David Ferguson, his father.
“It’s his body. It’s his choice. “
It’s not the first time an unvaccinated American has faced health care hurdles in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, a Minnesota woman sued her local hospital after doctors tried to remove her unvaccinated husband from the fan he had been using for two months.
Slightly more than 63% of the U.S. population is doubled, and about 40% of Americans have received a third booster dose.
