The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (FDA) in the United States says most people infected with the Omicron variant are fully vaccinated.
The Health Authority said that out of 43 cases currently confirmed with the Omicron variant, 34 are vaccinated with two doses. In fact, 1/3 of those infected have received the third booster dose of the anti-covid vaccine.
Although the numbers of those infected with the Omicron variant are small, they add to the concern that current vaccines offer less protection against the highly contagious variant.
The Omicron variant has been reported in more than 20 U.S. states to date, having initially been identified in southern Africa in late November. Most cases of Omicron in the US are reported to have only mild symptoms, including cough and tearing.
