Following the failure of the license plate agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, a high-level political meeting is required between Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
Such a meeting is considered welcome, which could provide a solution to the problem of vehicle license plates of the two countries, but would also pave the way for dialogue on a final agreement.
Experts on the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue process tell KosovaPress that the momentum has been created for the Kurti-Vucic meeting, in which the representative of the United States of America should also be present.
The expert on political circumstances, sociologist Artan Muhaxhiri, tells KosovaPress that only high-level political meetings can give hope for reaching an agreement.
“A meeting between Prime Minister Kurti and President Vucic would be welcome because it would give a spark of hope for the possibility of resuming dialogue. For Kosovo, dialogue is vital on the European agenda and without high-level meetings there can be no major steps forward. “Only in the meetings of Prime Minister Kurti and President Vuçi mund can there be hope that an agreement can be reached which will help the citizens, but also Kosovo’s European agenda.”says Muhaxhiri.
The Kurti-Vucic meeting is also expected by the political analyst, Gazmir Raci, but this requires greater involvement of the US in this process.
“Following the geopolitical developments and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, I think that the dialogue will take a different direction and I expect the direct and stronger commitment of the European Union and of course the greater support from the United States of America in order for the parties to resolve this issue. . The Russian threat in the Balkans is active and therefore both the US and the EU should be seriously involved in this phase… I believe that greater US and more direct engagement could lower the high level again, finally there is no other solution that without the political leaders sitting down we can not reach the final agreement “he declares.
Meanwhile, Arbër Fetahu from the Group for Legal and Political Studies, says that in the Kurti-Vuçi tak meeting, the negotiations for the final agreement should resume.
“If we look at the analysis of political stability, Serbia and Kosovo also meet the conditions to advance the dialogue process, as the political legitimacy and political stability of the governments of both countries is not a matter of discussion and there is no obstacle in this regard. Given Vucic’s great victory and the months-long stalemate in dialogue, we consider it a new opportunity for these negotiations to resume.“, He says.
Despite two days of negotiations on April 20th and 21st in Brussels, Kosovo and Serbia did not find agreement to reach an agreement on vehicle license plates. The interim agreement for the placement of stickers on state symbols on vehicle license plates is expected to continue until a permanent solution is reached.
The Kurti-Vucic meeting was announced yesterday by the director of the so-called Office for Kosovo in the Government of Serbia, Petar Petkovic.
