Twitter, Facebook and other social networks mobilized today to remove from the network footage of the assassination of Japan’s former prime minister, which were collectively defined as content that violates the rules or is harmful.
Multiple videos have been shared of the lone gunman firing his homemade weapon twice at Abe, although some only show the moments before or immediately after the attack.
But some of them showed the two fatal shots of the former Japanese soldier, who was arrested at the scene by the police.
Abe, who is out of office in 2020, was shot moments after starting his speech, rushed to hospital and later pronounced dead.
Twitter said its teams are working to deal with “harmful content” related to the attack by “removing material” that violates the network’s rules, including scenes of violence.
FacebookMeta said it was acting in accordance with its policies on dangerous individuals, calling the specific photos of the attack disturbing.
YouTube said its systems are focusing on disallowed videos from groups with more authority, such as news agencies and top-following groups, under violent or graphic content rules.
