The Extraordinary Session of the European Parliament on the crisis in Ukraine has started. It was the president of this institution, Roberta Metsola, who started the session thanking all the people of Ukraine for the resistance. She announced that “Ukraine’s candidacy for the EU will be considered, we will work to achieve this goal.”
The president further condemned the Russian attack, saying it was a crime against humanity. The Ukrainian delegates were then greeted with applause by European officials.
“Thank you for showing the world what resistance means“, Said Metsola. She said Russia would be investigated for war crimes in Ukraine.
On Monday, following a telephone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the bloc to grant his country immediate EU membership as it fights Russian occupation.
Becoming a member of the bloc is a complex procedure and Ukraine is not currently an official candidate for EU membership.
