The chairman of the SP parliamentary group, Taulant Balla, spoke to journalists in the presidency of the Assembly about the extension of the vetting mandates.
Balla was asked if they are negotiating with the opposition or leaving it to the internationals as an issue, which he said is a necessity. Among other things, he stressed that without vetting, we would not have purified justice.
“I think that the extension of the mandates of the vetting bodies is not a matter of political convictions. Without vetting, we would not have today a purified justice o with corrupt and criminal connections, o people who do not justify wealth or with the dimension of professional training. The initiative to extend the vetting mandate is a necessity. “The consciousness and responsibility of each of the deputies forces us to be in the Assembly hall and to vote”, tha Balla.
In addition to the Socialists, the request for the extension of the mandate of the Independent Qualification Commission and the Public Commissioner, has also come from representatives of the European Commission and vetting institutions in a hearing held two months ago with the Legislative Council in the Albanian Parliament.
Maciej Popowski, Chairman of the International Monitoring Operations Board, IOM at the European Commission said through an online link that he supported the Assembly’s initiative to amend the Constitution, in order to extend the mandate of vetting institutions. He described the justice reform as one of the biggest reforms that Albania had undertaken to open negotiations with the European Union.
The majority has requested the extension of the mandate of the bodies of the process of verification of official figures, as on June 17, 2022, the mandate of the Independent Qualification Commission and the Public Commissioner ends.
The Constitution provides that when the mandate of the KPC and public commissioners ends, unfinished re-evaluation issues are reviewed by the High Judicial Council and the High Prosecution Council.
The SP has proposed extending the mandate of the commissions that carry out the vetting process in the justice system until 2024.
In order to extend the term of the two new bodies of justice, the socialist majority also needs the votes of the opposition, as it needs 94 votes.
